We dig Digby
Our sightseeing today took us from Halifax to Digby. The weather continues to hold and the scenery is stunning. There were several stops along our way.
We did not tour the museum, but pulled over at Grand Pré, the site of the Expulsion. There is quite a bit to see, so we will return ( unlike the Acadians).
In Wolfville, we got a bit lost while avoiding a traffic snarl in the small downtown. Hoping to circumvent the main street, our GPS took us onto a rough road, going further and further from civilization. It is a bad sign, when you run out of pavement. So, we turned around and made our way back to our beginning, but had to skip Acadia University for lack of time.
Annapolis Royal - charming, terribly quiet, est. 1606. We can't say enough about this historic, authentic spot...so I won't even try.
On our ‘must see’ list, was the site of Maude Lewis’ home in Marshalltown. NS has some decent signage for this spot, but we kept misinterpreting the directions, and ( once again) ended up on a dirt road
( think Wolfville) Happily, we found the sweet little roadside park with benches, interpretive signs and the building - a steel memorial structure, inspired by her home on the original site.
Digby was the biggest surprise. Tiny Digby ( pop.2000) is home to the scallop fishing industry. And, to the Wharf Rat Rally-one of Canada’s largest motorcycle rallies....this weekend! The roads were lined with m-bikes, and as we sat in the Captain’s Cabin Restaurant, hundreds more roared in . Our server informed us there would be thousands by tomorrow. It’s a family friendly event apparently, but where will they all go, sleep, eat?? We dined on a lobster roll and scallops ( natch).
I am intrigued by small town Maritime names- like Economy and Lower Economy. I guess you might get a deal on real estate there; but Paradise sounds more upscale.
This is a bit long but it was a big day. Tomorrow, we will stay put at our house.
Ed and I really enjoyed our stay in Digby. And the scallops! Our trip to view the lighthouse at the end of the point was full of anxiety for me. Our gas tank was running on fumes and I thought for sure that we would be stranded and miss our ferry to NB! It is beautiful country.
ReplyDeleteWhat fun for you to see the bikers!
🚗. Yikes!
DeleteHey got my name finally! Thanks for telling us of your daily adventures! We loved the same road you are travelling. Digby was awesome for scallops on the dock, so delicious. And of course where Norm knocked on someone’s door because his name was Gidney! No relation
ReplyDeleteI am so glad to see your name, Mary. Blogger is a challenge. Very brave of Norm to knock on a stranger’s door, but people are very friendly and polite here, so I am sure Unrelated Gidney was gracious.
